Program Handouts Plagued by low test scores, high drop-out rates and safety issues, Paterson Public Schools embarked on its ambitious Strategic Plan 2009-2014 to transform itself into a high-performing urban district. Focused on a mission to prepare all students for success in college and career, this plan included a community-driven High School Renewal Initiative designed to increase student achievement and improve graduation rates. The district restructured its large high schools into small, autonomous “choice” schools, each aligned with a career or academic theme. Positive outcomes include improving HSPA performance by 22 percentage points in English language arts and 18 percentage points in math. Session participants will learn research and best practices for improving student outcomes in high schools, understand the change model that guided the development and implementation of the high school renewal effort and understand the obstacles and facilitators of the change effort.
